Have Fun in the Sun – It Benefits Your Health and Well-Being

Summer is one of the best times of the year to get outside and be active. While enjoying the outdoors, how often have you considered what the actual health benefits are? There are many advantages to getting off the couch and heading outside.

Health Benefits of Getting Outside

  1. Improves mood
  2. Increases vitamin D levels
  3. Boosts energy levels
  4. Strengthens the immune system

Being outside can significantly decrease feelings of anxiety, depression and anger. It also helps improve your immune system by increasing the production of white blood cells that help fight infections. Increasing vitamin D promotes calcium absorption and increases phosphate levels to support bone health and prevent muscle cramps. Studies suggest spending at least 120 minutes or two hours per week outside to improve overall health and well-being.

Benefits of Staying Active

  1. Improves heart and cardiovascular health
  2. Reduces stress
  3. Manages weight
  4. Improves mood

Regular physical activity can help improve overall heart and cardiovascular health by strengthening the heart and improving blood pressure. Physical activity also helps improve mood and reduce stress. It is recommended to get 150 minutes per week of moderate intensity exercise. By overlapping physical activity and being outside you can bring all the benefits of both together.

There are many activities to do in the summer, including biking, swimming, hiking, gardening and outdoor volleyball, to name a few.

While active, don’t forget to stay safe in the sun! Wearing sunscreen and protective clothing can help prevent sun damage or heat stroke. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. Do not hike or swim alone and make sure you have or know where a first aid kit is.

Being safe and prepared is the best way to have fun in the sun!
