How’s Your Digital Well-Being?

Digital well-being refers to the impact of digital services and technologies on your mental, physical, emotional and social health. It can also refer to tools that help users balance their digital and real lives.
In recent years, smartphones, laptops and tablets have become a major part of our daily lives, helping us stay connected to the world. Their convenience and ability to be used anytime and anywhere have led to a significant increase in their use, becoming second nature for many people, even when it’s unnecessary. These devices have integrated deeply into both our personal and professional lives, offering comfort and easy access to information and communication.
Finding Balance for Tech Use
On average, a person taps or swipes their phone around 2,600 times a day, spending about three to five hours on it daily. This overuse often leads to procrastination, unnecessary screen time and poor sleep, all of which negatively impact performance and productivity and increase stress levels.
Constant connectivity has led to social pressures to always stay in touch, concerns over safety, and declines in mood and overall well-being. Due to the negative effects on health and reduced well-being, finding new ways to address this issue is becoming increasingly important.
Digital well-being is about maintaining a healthy relationship with technology. As our lives become more entwined with digital devices, it's crucial to use them in ways that enhance, rather than harm, our overall well-being. If used properly and with intention, technology can offer tools for relaxation, learning, and staying connected with loved ones.
Finding balance is key to digital well-being. This means setting boundaries, such as limiting time on social media or turning off notifications to reduce distractions. It also involves being mindful of how digital interactions affect our mood and mental health. By adopting healthier tech habits, we can enjoy the benefits of technology without feeling overwhelmed by it.
Tips for Creating Digital Balance
- Set screen time limits: Use apps or built-in phone features to monitor and manage your daily screen time.
- Prioritize offline activities: Engage in hobbies, exercise or social activities that don't involve screens.
- Mindful tech use: Be aware of how certain apps or sites make you feel and adjust your usage accordingly.
- Digital detox: Take regular breaks from screens, especially before bedtime, to improve sleep and reduce digital fatigue. Many of us experience bouts of exhaustion, burnout and lack of energy. Fatigue can be a normal and important response to physical activity, stress, boredom or a lack of sleep. One of the more common causes of fatigue is lifestyle. There are several habits we can implement and a few we can remove from our daily life to reduce fatigue and take on each day recharged.
