The Nine Dimensions of Wellness

There are countless factors that contribute to overall health and well-being, and they can be grouped into nine different categories known as the Nine Dimensions of Wellness. These include physical, emotional, financial, spiritual, social, career, intellectual, creative and environmental. All the dimensions are connected and support each other.

Four ways to start that make a big difference:

  1. Reach 30 minutes of physical activity five days a week.
  2. Eat five fruits and vegetables per day.
  3. Limit alcohol intake to max one per day.
  4. Don’t smoke.

Reduce the risk for chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes, back pain and many others by making small changes. Eating a healthy diet, getting in daily activity, managing stress and having good social connections are all ways to better your overall well-being.

Choose one or two areas to focus on and start by tracking a few habits that support your well-being and reflect on your experiences. Some examples include tracking sleep, water intake, stress levels or finances. This can help you see where you are currently and what you want to work on. This will also help identify what your stressors, motivators and barriers may be.

Set Goals for Improved Wellness

The next step is to set goals. What are the top three areas you want to focus on and what changes do you want to make? Start thinking: Do I want to work on being more active? Do I want to reach out to a friend I haven’t talked to in a long time? Do I want to learn something new or start a new personal project?

Set SMART goals: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timebound. After making your goal, rate your confidence on achieving your goal on a scale of 1 to 10. If it is lower than a 7, change your goal in a small way or work through what may be a barrier. It’s better to start small and take one step at a time to reach your overall goal. Then, set a short-term behavior change for one to two weeks to help break up a larger goal.
