Medicare Supplement Gives New Retiree Peace of Mind While Traveling
As a recent retiree, Lezlee Koch and her husband, Gary, enjoy the extra time they now have for traveling, fishing, hunting and spending time with family and friends.
To make that transition into retirement as worry-free as possible, Lezlee made sure they were financially protected for unexpected health costs due to an injury or illness. They knew their Medicare Part A and Part B insurance coverage might not be enough.
That's because Medicare Part A and Part B coverage alone left them responsible for health care costs such as coinsurance, co-pays and deductibles.
"What many people don't know - or think about - is that your portion of those costs has no limit," says Jordan Anderson, Vice President of Sales and Account Management for Avera Health Plans. "That's where Medicare Supplement plans come in and really make a difference."
A Medicare Supplement policy helps "fill the gap" in Medicare coverage by paying for a portion of those remaining health care costs.
Health Insurance Coverage for the Unexpected
Knowing that, Lezlee and her husband shopped around for a Medicare Supplement policy that would fit their budget and lifestyle.
"My family will tell you that I don't make snap decisions, especially when it might affect us financially," Koch says. "I compared four different Medicare Supplement insurance carriers to determine which would best meet our needs. I looked for affordability, great service and a wide range of coverage, including coverage while traveling."
They settled on an Avera Health Plans policy, and it didn't take long for Koch to realize how valuable Medicare Supplement coverage is. An accident while camping this past summer left her with a leg fracture that required surgery and more than a few follow-up appointments.
However, thanks to their Medicare Supplement policy, they were well covered. Lezlee could focus on resting and healing instead of stressing about health insurance and bills.
"When the accident occurred, we were only 19 miles from an Avera facility," she recalls. "Nothing was out of network because of the wide region that Avera covers."
"On top of that, it was a seamless and efficient process for my claims to be paid. My out-of-pocket expenses were next to nothing and my agent responded very quickly when I had questions."
While tracking her claims via Avera Health Plans' online tools, she discovered that without a Medicare Supplement policy, they would have been responsible for nearly $6,000 in out-of-pocket expenses. "When you have a limited income, that kind of coverage is awesome," she says.
Tips for Choosing a Medicare Supplement
When it comes to choosing a Medicare Supplement policy, Anderson says the best thing to do is talk with an agent.
"Health care is personal. When your agent understands your needs, he or she can help you select a plan that works best for your lifestyle - both now and into the future," he says.
He also adds that all Medicare Supplement plans are standardized, which means that a Plan F is the same no matter which health insurance carrier you work with. However, pricing can differ.
"Premium prices change form one carrier to another and also from year to year. That's why it's important to shop around each year - no matter how long you've had Medicare."
