Health Insurance Premium Payment FAQ

When is my first payment due?

You officially become a member after we receive your first month’s premium. New members must make their first payment at the time of enrollment or, if you enrolled for Individual On-Exchange coverage, by the avenue outlined when you receive your initial invoice.

When does the automatic bank withdrawal for my monthly premium payment occur?

For members with Individual On-Exchange, Off-Exchange or Medicare Supplement plans who enroll in auto pay, payments will automatically come out of your bank account on the 26th of the month prior to your coverage period.

How do I know if my payment has been received or processed?

IMPORTANT: With our transition to Epic for our electronic medical record and member system, all online payments (one-time and auto pay) will show on your bank or credit card account as Waystar or Patientco instead of Avera Health Plans.

  • To confirm that your payment was received, we recommend contacting your bank or reviewing your bank statement to verify that the payment has been withdrawn from your account.
  • Members with Individual Off-Exchange and Medicare Supplement plans can also view payment activity through the MyChart portal in the Billing section.
  • Employer groups can see this information in the Employer Link portal.
  • If you mail a check or drop off a payment, please allow 72 hours (three business days) for Avera to process your payment.
  • If you pay online through healthcare.gov, you should receive an automatic email to confirm your payment was successful.

Who can use the automatic premium payment service?

Automatic monthly payments are available for individuals who don't have an employer-provided health plan. Members who receive health insurance through an employer will have their premium payment deducted by the employer through their payroll.

Can I make my first premium payment via auto pay?

You can set up your auto pay for your initial payment after you sign up for a plan with us. Depending on when you enroll and your effective date, there may be times when two months of premiums are drafted at once.

Can I use the one-time, online premium payment option more than once?

Yes, on-exchange members can make an online premium payment in the Avera MyChart member portal.

We recommend setting up auto pay so you don’t have to worry about paying a premium each month and so future payments are processed in a timely manner.

Can you make a partial premium payment?

For your first premium payment, you must pay the entire amount at once. However, for future payments you can make a partial premium payment. Full payment of your premium is required before the end of the grace period to avoid termination and possible refund of payment (one payment per day only).

When making a partial payment online, you can enter any dollar amount equal to, more than or less than the premium owed. Each payment made will be applied to the balance due.

  2. Select the Billing tile on your home screen, or in the menu, search for or navigate to Premium Billing under the Insurance section.
