After-Care Hours or Emergency Care

Options for After-Care Hours

There's a big difference between the cost of an Urgent Care versus an emergency room visit versus a free phone call.

We want you to know your options so you can make the best decision for your family's health that's also cost efficient. And we know there is room for improvement - three out of four members used the Emergency Room for non-emergency reasons, according to a 2016 Emergency Room Claims Review at Avera Health Plans.

Always call 911 if the person has collapsed, had a seizure, not breathing or can't be awakened.

1. Call our Nurse Hotline at 605-322-1354

Our qualified, trained staff and registered nurses are available to answer your medical questions 24/7. They’ll also help you judge the severity of your situation and direct you to a nearby facility, if needed.

2. AveraNow

AveraNow lets you connect with a provider anytime for simple illnesses. This service is offered free to many of our members. Log in to your member portal to access your coupon code.

3. Visit your primary care physician

Your primary health care provider takes care of most of your health concerns.

Visit your primary care physician for basic health concerns listed below:

  • Minor cuts
  • Strains and fractures
  • Cold or flu symptoms
  • Ear infections
  • Minor allergic reactions
  • Back pain
  • Minor headaches
  • Fevers
  • Diarrhea
  • Sore Throat

4. Urgent Care

If your condition isn’t life-threatening, but also can’t wait until an appointment with your primary health care provider, consider a visit to urgent care. Urgent care is a good option for:

  • Episodes of asthma
  • Back pain
  • Moderate burns
  • Eye irritations
  • Migraine headaches

When visiting an in-network urgent care or after-hours clinic, you’ll use your Avera Health Plans office visit benefit, which provides you with significant savings.

5. Emergency Services

Emergency care is for life-threatening situations, or severe injuries or illnesses that cannot wait.

When you have the option, please choose an in-network hospital when going to the emergency room to keep your expenses to a minimum.
