Step 1: Check if Medicare Supplement Works with Your Current Coverage
Medicare Supplement insurance works with Original Medicare Parts A and B. It helps pay certain out-of-pocket costs left after Original Medicare pays its share. However, you cannot use a Medicare Supplement policy with a Medicare Advantage plan.
Medicare Supplement policies sold today do not include outpatient prescription drug coverage. If you want prescription drug coverage, you may also want to consider a separate Medicare Part D plan.
Step 2: Decide on Your Coverage Needs
Consider how important nationwide hospital and facility access is to you.
AgilityPlus Select Plan G
A network-based plan, such as Medicare Supplement AgilityPlus Select Plan G (where available), may fit you if:
- You are comfortable using participating hospitals and surgical centers within the service area.
- Your preferred facilities participate in the plan’s network.
- You want an opportunity to lower your monthly premium.
- The plan’s travel benefit meets your needs.
AgilityPlus Standard Plan G
Medicare Supplement AgilityPlus Standard Plan G may fit you if:
- You want access to any Medicare-approved hospital or facility.
- You frequently receive care outside the network-based plan’s service area.
- You spend extended periods away from home.
- Broader facility access is more important to you than a lower monthly premium.
Check Your Providers and Travel Needs
Before choosing a plan, ask:
- Can I keep my current doctor?
- Are my preferred hospitals and surgical centers in the network?
- What happens if I need non-emergency care outside the service area?
- How long does the travel benefit last?
- What happens if I need emergency care?
- Do I spend part of the year in another state?
Always review the applicable provider directory and Outline of Coverage before enrolling.
Step 3: Consider Your Total Costs
A lower monthly premium does not always mean the lowest total cost. Consider:
- The monthly premium
- Deductibles and other out-of-pocket costs
- How often you receive medical care
- Whether your preferred hospitals participate
- How frequently you travel
- Whether you qualify for a household premium discount
A licensed agent can help you compare potential premium savings with the amount you could pay when receiving care.
High-Deductible Options
A high-deductible plan generally offers a lower monthly premium. In exchange, you pay more of your covered medical costs before the plan begins paying benefits.
The high-deductible version of Medicare Supplement AgilityPlus Select Plan G may be a good fit if keeping your monthly premium lower is important and you are comfortable paying more when you receive care.
Household Premium Discount
You may qualify for a lower premium based on your living arrangement, age and how long you have lived with another qualifying person. Requirements vary by plan and state.
Ask a licensed agent to determine whether you qualify.
